Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

One of my favorite newspapers is The Atlantic (I read it online). Monday, I read a very intriguing article about a group of people in California who are healthier and therefore live a lot longer  than the average American. They are an interesting bunch…they are all Seventh Day Adventists (which I thought was an offshoot of Mormonism but , apparently, isn’t). I don’t plan to convert, but maybe I could eat a little more like they do. They eat primarily a Mediterranean diet, are mostly vegetarian, and their faith stresses the importance of health and well being.

The statistics they quoted on heart disease were unbelievable…Even people who ate only chicken and fish had more heart disease than those who were vegetarian! I’ve always assumed that red meat was the culprit…apparently not. I’m seriously considering becoming a vegetarian. (I don’t think I can go vegan, I like eggs too much) I think I could easily replace meat with beans and be just fine with it (though more gassy).

You can find books on the Mediterranean Diet if you are interested in reading more about it.  Generally whole foods, non-processed foods.

Have you been musical lately? :P

People who are vegetarian aren't more healthy if they replace the animal proteins with unhealthy ones like cheese.  (It's ok SOMETIMES-just not all the time)

If you want to try being veg, start getting into the fake meats and ease them into your diet.  You might like some and hate others.  Personally, I think the best fake chicken is Quorn-but, it's a little pricy and I have to go out of my way for it, so, I make due with Morningstar Farms fake chicken which is ok.  I haven't found a fake hamburger that I tolerate yet--too many spices for my taste.  The fake hotdogs are only doable with tons of ketchup and mustard--and relish.  The fake bacon is ok (if you don't expect it to taste 100% like real meat-just like the rest of the fakes) and the fake sausage is actually pretty good.  Just experiment with the ready made stuff for convenience-and then if you want to cook with it in casseroles, they sell fake ground beef and fake chicken strips so you can use them in that and in tacos, pizzas, pastas, etc and all sorts of things the same as you would meat.  You don't always have to do beans for your protein. (Plus, there are nuts, soy (tofu, edamame etc), cheese, greek yogurt , TVP, and other sorts of protein you could do.  Trust me--if you did ONLY beans, that wouldn't take too long to get really old!)
