Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

Our gym membership expired at the end of March. I love this gym. We got in on a really good deal because they had just opened and were offering 18 months for the price of 12 months. Now I think their prices have increased by over 20% and I just think it's freaking outrageous what they're charging. But it is a great gym with excellent equipment, maintenance and classes. The big plus is that it's right across the street. I was thinking of just going month to month but it's 1.5x as much if you go month to month. We were paying less than half that on our last membership. There are lots of other gyms around in the area but they are nowhere near the quality. Some only offer weights. Some only offer classes. Most of the places look kind of grungy. Ours doesn't even have anything fancy like a pool or sauna, etc but I love it and am used to it. I am also just moaning and groaning and typing out my thoughts on this gym thing. My husband is saying for sure he isn't going to join again and he will just rely on the bike so maybe I can see that as a 50% discount?? Makes sense, right? Right?!

My eating went well today. I had some different stuff to chow on thanks to our Costco excursion yesterday. I also got ill in the afternoon off of something I ate. Nothing debilitating but let's just say I got pretty dehydrated. No way of knowing what it was but I think it's over. I'm going to start writing down my tracking again here on the blog. It really helps to keep things in check and I used to be so good about it. Laziness seems to have consumed me lately and I know that I'm eating too much at 'snack' time.

Breakfast: 1/2 cup of full fat cottage cheese (had no idea cc had that much protein) - (150), pure carrot juice (130)

Snack: apple (100)

Lunch: protein packed packaged salad w/ dressing (360)

Snack: english muffin w/ lean roast beef (160)

Snack (ALL OF THIS UNNECESSARY): a few bites of hummus (50), 1/2 granola bar (80), 1/4 c + pecan mix (150)

Dinner: Mediterranean veggies (frozen Costco bag) with 3 crab sticks (~600)

Total: ~1800

Exercise: nada

I have a gym delimma as well.  I'm trying to decide if mine is worth it.  It's so hard.

There isn't much to like about my gym, but one thing that's nice is that there are no contracts and no penalties if you only want to join for a few months. I know I won't go to the gym in the summer, so there's just no sense in committing to a full year like the chain gyms force you to do. However, you DO like your gym, and if you will continue to go year 'round, I think it's a worthwhile investment.

Maybe you can negotiate a deal or something. I once negotiated a really sweet cell phone plan because I was  hesitant to sign a contract, so they kept tossing on extras to convince me to sign. You never know what you get until you haggle!

Can you barter w/the people in charge? Like tell them that your membership is expiring and ask if they'll match the rates of other places--bring proof of the rates, too.  With the economy the way it is, I'm sure the gyms are really wanting members so let them know that money is tight and that if they don't match, you plan to leave.  Maybe they'll cut you a deal.  Can't hurt to try! :)

Hi Cindy!!!  I agree with Keem.  Gyms always negotiate deals.  To be honest, I would start off by asking them to extend you another 18 months for the price of 12 and then go from there.  I can't even tell you how many deals I have had to negotiate for local area business discounts (even gyms!) at work.  You never know until you ask...

Also, there seems to be some sort of violent belly bug going around...

I would talk to the gym too.  It can't hurt...

With that said- if you can be motivate yourself with the bike and weights it can be a great money saver.  I have a REALLY hard time motivating myself at home- so I always find a way to afford a gym(if at all possible)
