Blog to Lose

No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!

It seems like ever since I lost my job, I have come unanchored. Off-track. Even though I am taking 2 classes and an internship, I still feel lost.

This is most obvious in my meals. Or lack of. The kids have been getting sandwiches for dinner more often than I want to admit. I have been eating little bits of things here and there, without a plan. This is insane, which hasn't hit me until I just read that. What are you doing, Jennifer?

I got on the scale this morning and it read 158 and I was like "huh" and then a minute later I realized "ohmygod, that is practically 160!!!!" What is going on here??

At the end of last week I came down with a cold quite suddenly. And along with the general malaise I also experienced a disconnected feeling around food. I had no anxiety about what I ate - and not in a good way. In fact, the only feeling I had was misery. I did not run. I ran out of kleenex. My nose hurt. My head hurt. Everything hurt.

I am feeling a bit better today, enough to know I need to make a plan that I can follow for meals. The complicating factor is that my husband and I are fairly new vegetarians. The kids are not. And I did low-carb for the last year, so I have a head full of food rules that I need to sift through every time I try to decide on a meal. It can be so overwhelming.

How do any of you plan your meals? Do you do it weekly? Do you plan each meal and snack? Give a girl some help!

I meal plan each week. I bring my lunch to work every day. It is usually a cup of whatever is left over from dinner. Tomorrow it will be a 1 cup of Potato/Rice/Veggie Medley. A low cal/low fat dish I found. I will round it out with snacks like a serving of baby carrots and chopped celery. I usually bring 2 servings of fruit. This week it is grapes and a banana. During lunch I scour my cookbooks and pick out at least 3 dishes. I have a few really good veg cookbooks that contain recipes that take 30 minutes to get on the table. One pot wonders my hubby calls them. There are great books out there on being a vegetarian. The library is a great place to explore them.

I usually plan on the weekends, but I can't plan out the whole week out just a few days and plan for leftovers on the other days. Good luck!

New, here, but I just thought I'd throw my two cents in.  Weeks where I meal plan are usually weeks where I eat better.  I have a really cool little recipe app on my iphone that I use when I need inspiration, and to plan actual meals. I don't plan snacks through the week but I am sure to have some on hand, as I've come to realize it's a bad idea to let myself get TOO hungry.  It's nice to have some cottage cheese, fruit, or hummus and pepper strips on standby.

Since your kids are not vegetarians, maybe you should try looking for meals that are mostly vegetarian to begin with, but would be easy to add a meat to for your children?  Then you won't be cooking two completely different meals.  For example, a veggie stir fry or chickpea curry that you can add chicken to at the end, some vegetarian chili with beans (they won't even miss the meat on something like that!), or if they want burgers, throw a couple of boca burgers on the grill at the same time!  The less work you make for you, the easier it will be to eat well!

I usually plan out in my head what my menu will be that day.  I might have certain meals in mind when I shop-but I usually don't have specific days in mind at the time. :)
