No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!
Hello all. First off, if you're not familiar or just want a good motivational story you should check out my marathon recap post from last year.
Now on to marathon #2. I'll keep it as short and sweet as possible. Came down with a double ear infection, sinus infection, and fluid in my lungs about two weeks ago. To make matters worse, I had chosen to skip the previous week's worth of runs for no darn good reason other than working super late. Once again, I found myself in a situation where I was afraid to try because I was afraid I might fail. I hadn't run in three weeks until last Sunday. Did a couple baby 3-miler runs this past week and I was feeling...OK.
But I kicked my own ass and told myself--you paid $100. The least you can do is try. Lower expectations, try your best. So that's exactly what I did!
Beautiful day here in Minneapolis/Saint Paul, MN! Perfect marathoning weather. I was feeling great up until Mile 20. I was on pace to come in under 5 hours (my initial goal before getting sick). That said, my heart rate (I have an HRM) had been creeping up and up and up and was pushing 190 by Mile 20. Had to cut back. I walked for 1-2 miles and my HR wouldn't budge below 175. Not good. So I had to walk the last 6 miles...but you know what?
I FREAKING FINISHED! 5:24:05. And not too far off of LY's time (5:09:53). I recognized my limits, accepted them and did what I could to still finish. I tackled my fear of failure with open arms...and YOU SHOULD TOO!
No more marathons for a while. It's a great deal of work and time. Plus, the husband bought me THIS for my birthday!
A road bike! I've been playing with giving triathlons a try and now I'm gonna get serious. Only issue? I don't know how to swim. Yep, I'm afraid to be a grown-ass adult having to take swimming classes at my local gym...but you know what?
I'm gonna face that fear too!
Comment by Jackie on October 2, 2011 at 6:21pm That is so amazing! The stamina it takes to run that much has to be huge. Congratulations on finishing!! I'm sure you'll pick up swimming very quickly. :)
Congrats on the race. With all those obstacles you were amazing! Love the new Cannondale. Can you feel my envy?? Your husband is so great. Did he pick it out or did you? You could start with bi-athlons. I think they might have them for folks who can't or won't swim. You look so damn happy and I am really glad to see it. Some of your other posts had me worried.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE road biking. I have signed up for 2 rides. One is this weekend. It is 31 miles. I hope you love road biking as much as I do. I feel so free when I am out riding. A great place to think! I can't wait to hear your biking stories. If you have an questions about the tri's let me know!
Comment by Nubia on October 2, 2011 at 9:28pm Aw, congratulations!! How sweet of your hubby. I can't believe it, marathon #2? You rock. I can't swim either and I'm afraid to learn, nothing wrong with that. My husband was trying to teach me how to float in the pool the other day but I started to embarrass him when I'd sink and freak out. It's ok, next summer will be the summer. It's set.
Comment by Megan on October 2, 2011 at 10:19pm You did it and you looked amazing doing it!! I love it!! I can't believe you were so sick and still did it. But then again I can bc I've read your posts for so long now and I know you don't give up. You are a huge inspiration to me.
