No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!
I saw a great article today that I just had to share here, it captures alot of what we talk about, the more mental aspect of weight loss success.
It's called "5 Signs You'll Reach Your Weight Loss Goal". Each point is fully described in the full article, but here are the 5 points:
1. You Have Patience
2. You Persevere Through Set-backs
3. You Accept Your Body
4. You Focus on Your Goal
5. You Make Yourself a Priority
I found something beneficial in every point. Rather than copy the person's article, I've linked to it. If you read it, I'd love to hear in the comments which point or points resonate most with you.
For me, number 4 really stood out, though I took something from each point. But number 4 is an area where I feel I get stuck more often. Here's what she had to say about focusing:
"Focus on where you’re headed instead of obsessing about where you are. You can’t move forward if your mind dwells on self-critical thoughts about being overweight. What we focus our attention on grows. Shift negative attention away from your current weight and concentrate on the positive lifestyle changes you’re making. This inspires you to succeed. When your desire to look forward overshadows the tendency to complain about where you are, you’ll reach your goal more easily."
My own self-critical thoughts aren't so much about my body- for me it's simple to accept that my body looks one way now, and will look another once I put in the hard work. But I do get very self-critical about what I view as my laziness and lack of discipline that keeps me falling for the same old eating habits even after I've been doing well. I get so mad at myself, and I need to keep reminding myself, focus on the positives! There are many. I've made a lot of changes. But I tend to put all my focus on the changes I haven't made.
I've gotten this advice, to focus more on what's been accomplished, from BTLers too, and it's really helpful. I just need to keep it in mind.
Comment by christina on October 4, 2012 at 5:01pm that was a great article and thanks for sharing!!
Number 5 stood out for me!! This is what was happening for a loooong time in my life!! I always had something planed so i could skip working out! And most of the times, this "something" was going out for dinner or lunch! Never had as a priority a better me, a healthier me!
But now this belongs to the past! Every decision i make is because I love my body and I take a good care of it! I am my priority and believe me this makes me feel waaay better than any lunch or dinner!!!
Thanks for sharing as this entire article is exactly what I needed today. It is a toss up for me with #4 & #5. I need to remember I can not move forward if I dwell on self critical thoughts about being overweight. I really needed to read this today.
Comment by Jill Mace on October 4, 2012 at 11:25pm Great article! I agree with you- for me it's #4. Dwelling gets me in trouble. Thanks for sharing! This helps me A LOT!!!!
Accepting your body is hard. If you loved the way you look, you would probably not make any changes at all. :P
Comment by Dee on October 5, 2012 at 2:00pm Glad everyone enjoyed the article! It's interesting to see which ones stood out for you. It's definitely a good perspective- I printed this one out and put it inside my recipe binder in the front, to remind myself. I actually look into my binder often, despite cooking not so often! But to be positive: At least I look! One day, I'll cook!
Comment by Brandy on October 5, 2012 at 10:29pm I've had to get over the "good eating" vs "bad eating" cycle. When I can do that (which isn't all the time), it's a lot easier to move forward and see each choice as just that: a choice. It makes it so much easier to persevere and get back on the wagon, as was mentioned in point 2.
