No matter the plan... we all Blog to Lose!
My daughter and I are overweight, solid, muscular, large-boned. My husband and son are very skinny and tall. My husband and I have discussed (and fought) at length how to parent two children with very different dietary needs. In the end, we decided that we are all in this together: healthy eating and fitness. We all eat our "new vegetable of the month" together and we all get Diary Queen for a treat together. We are all trying to get each other moving more and cheering each other on. When my daughter and I threw out our favorite unhealthy foods, the husband and son did, too. I feel good about how we are approaching this situation, but I have to wonder if treating the kids the same is harmful in the long run. I would love to hear what other people and families do when it comes to diet, weight loss, weight gain, and fitness. How do you handle it?
I think you guys handled it well together--as a team--and looking at it as being healthy, not skinny. :)
As for our house, it's strange---I'm vegetarian with garlic/onion sensitivities. My daughter is just picky. My husband likes most everything. 98% of the time, I eat a different meal from them-something vegetarian (which is usually something calorie friendly) and do a total of 2 or 3 meals for dinner. I feel like a short order cook sometimes.
I've already tried to do the healthy eating thing around here--where I did all of the baking myself instead of buying cookies or other stuff--to healthify junk if we had to have it. Well--then, my husband started to "import" junk--Hostess, Little Debbies, candy, etc--and also had boxes at work....and I realized that nobody is forcing us to eat junk--we choose to eat healthy or not to. I think not having it around the house is a good idea if everyone will cave. I also think it's a good idea to have stuff in the house that's healthy and already made--like home baked goodies--so everyone might pick that over the Hohos etc. I learned just because I wanted to eat healthy and I wanted THEM to eat healthy, too, didn't mean that they did.
Comment by LindaB on February 6, 2013 at 8:11am We are a team as well at our house. My oldest son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 9. For the past 13 years our family eats the same all the way around. Its not a bad thing to teach our kids healthy eating habits regardless of where they are in the scheme of things at this very point in time. If we teach them while they are young, it will carry with them throughout their adult lives.
Way to go with the "Veggie of the Month" --- I love it. There are sooo many neat fruits and veggies out there that are really good for us.
Comment by Christy on February 6, 2013 at 11:30am I like your idea of being a team. Skinny does not equal healthy and I think it is important to teach kids that they need to eat certain way so that they can be HEALTHY regardless of their weight/build. Eating healthy should not be seen as a punishment, so I don't think there would be any long term negative effects. If anything, I could see there being long term resentment if they were treated differently because of their size.
