Lots of New Things

We were actually able to get into our new school EARLY! I didn't know that happened with construction projects. We were able to get into our classrooms on Friday and Saturday when we weren't scheduled to be in until Monday, so that is awesome. The new building is really pretty, and our classrooms are the exact same. They might be a tiny bit bigger, but it's hard to tell. It's been easy to get things arranged since everything is so similiar. We have the same type desk, filing cabinet, and… Continue

Still Around

Posted on July 29, 2009 at 1:24am 8 Comments

I'm still around, but I got addicted to a series of books and have been reading nonstop. I have two more books in the series to go, and then I'll return to normal. This is my last week of summer before in-service starts next week. My feelings range from immense dread to mild excitement about school starting.

I had a three pound loss last week, so I'm hoping that trend continues.

I've been staying on point but haven't necessarily been angelic. My mom wanted us to go to… Continue

Lots of Excitement

Posted on July 21, 2009 at 1:00am 2 Comments

Well I'm back from camp, and boy was it an interesting week. Our youth had a good time, and the husband and I ended up having quite the experience. The camp was a mission camp, and one of the missions was a sports camp for the local kids. The county we were in is one of the poorest in the state. They divide the kids into groups and have activities and Bible study for them. The husband and I got assigned to follow one of the kids around to watch him because he always caused trouble in past… Continue

Leaving Tomorrow

Posted on July 11, 2009 at 2:52pm 2 Comments

We leave for camp tomorrow. I've got my list of food that I can cook in the microwave so hopefully I won't get tired of the food. We have tons of packing and preparation that despite our relaxed schedule, we've saved for today of course. I had another headache last night, so we didn't get to go to the store last night. I plan to cook a good lunch and dinner today so that I can enjoy two last home cooked meals. I've got taco soup currently simmering on the stove.

I had lunch with my… Continue

Icecream Find

Posted on July 8, 2009 at 10:47pm 0 Comments

I've been doing pretty well. I was hungry a lot yesterday, but I'm doing better today. I discovered some delicious icecream. It's Breyer's fried ice cream. It's cinnamon and caramel with tostada pieces in it. It's 3 points for a half cup. I spent much of today researching on the internet about possible books for my 8th graders to read. Our district changed up our reading list and put the two books that I always read on different grades. It seems like 8th grade got stuck with leftovers because… Continue

Is it ever weird for you teaching 8th grade and only being 24? I'm 23 and I know I'd sometimes feel like one of the kids teaching 7th graders. I still feel young in a lot of aspects I guess; but I suppose you have to take charge.

My first year to teach was actually two years ago, so I was 22. It wasn't really weird to me because I was already married. I've always looked a little bit older than I am. I just made sure to keep a tight lip on my age. I love to joke around with my students, but I also know what I'm teaching them is important, so I'm always trying to balance the two. I have learned how to be tough and demand respect, and some days I'm like if they only knew how old I am, they'd die. And of course many days, I also feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. I truly love my job though.

Your little girl is so cute. To me, having children is something that is scary. We are starting to think about having children, but the thought just really scares me. Delete Comment

I was married 2 months before I turned 22. Growing up I always felt older than I was but now that I'm officially an adult (plus 5 years) I feel young again. Go figure! Good idea to keep your age quiet with your students...I could only imagine what we'd have done to a teacher so close to our own age. Kudos to you! I'm glad you enjoy your job, that's so important!
Having a child is very scary, IMO. It is a huge step and there's no turning back. DH and I wanted children right away. There's still some days that I've no idea what I'm doing and worry that I'm doing something to screw her up. It's all about perspective I suppose. Thank you, we think DD is kinda cute! :)

This comment got me thinking. I've heard a lot of people who are leary of artificial sweetners. I had a friend that when she found out I was eating it regulary got upset, but when I asked her why it was bad, she didn't know. I went online and found the following two articles. The summary that I gather from this is that people worry that these could cause cancer, but there is no proof of this. I would like to know if there is actual cause for concern. Thoughts?

I mostly use Splenda but occassionaly Sweet'n'Low. I also drink some diet soda. What I read actually made me feel better because it just looks like there was some initial concern but no hardcore findings. I haven't seen the Tagatose, but I'll keep an eye out. It's good to be careful, and I'm glad I looked it up.

I'm going to be teaching 9th grade English at a jr. high. My student teaching experience was with juniors and seniors, so this will be new and different. I'm super excited. I'm in a Fellowship program, so I'll be teaching full time, but also going to school full time--not sure how I'm going to survive! I would love to ask you for tips, etc. when school starts back up!

Yes, I've seen my classroom, but it was when someone else was still in there. It was a complete disaster. Plus, there was just too much furniture. So many bookcases and shelves that I felt a little claustrophobic. The furniture may still be there when I go in, so I'm going to try and get it put in storage. I can't give it away because it belongs to my mentor teacher.

Thanks for the comment! Fortunately I am feeling a little bit better today. Every day is a new day, although I DO wish it would heal even faster, haha! Hope you have a lovely weekend!

I'm getting a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction. Once school starts, I have classes 2 nights a week. I think that's what frightens me most (classes go from right after school to 9:00pm).

I just noticed your comment on my blog from last week. Hi! I think that teachers of middle-schoolers deserve HALOS. Seriously. I have a special place in my heart for junior highers, but I don't think I could teach them every day. :)

So, four cats too? Hurray! Zoe just plopped herself on top of my arms as I type. :)
